SUFFICIENT EXITS The necessary number of exits from a building depends on its size, its internal configuration, its use and its occupancy. In most cases at least two exits, remote from one another so that fire would not likely block both, are the minimum. More exits are required for buildings with greater occupancy capacity (at least one per 60 occupants). Large buildings or ones in which fire hazard activities occur need more exits. The key principle is that people inside be able to escape promptly. 1910.37(d)(2) During repairs or alterations, employees must not occupy a workplace unless the exit routes required by this subpart are available and existing fire protections are maintained, or until alternate fire protection is furnished that provides an equivalent level of safety
